The eighth generation quarter 4 2018 release Intel i3-8145U (4MB Smart cache) is an ultra low voltage processor with a Passmark benchmark score of 5495 as a mid-range to high-end processor. And at this level and speeds between 2.1GHz and 3.9GHz with turbo boost it will be more than adequate for your daily tasks- entertainment and business on the go without major lagging. 4GB DDR4 memory at 2133/2400 MHz is not a lot but will let you have a few browsers and apps open at the same time.
The 128GB PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive offers snappy performance overall, when opening files or starting the system. We can’t say it is a lot of storage space, although it will be OK for some computer users. And many people take advantage of the Cloud storage to have access to their saved files wherever there is internet access. Quite frankly at this low price level it is fantastic that you’re getting a 128GB Solid State Drive instead of a slow and heavy HDD. Windows 10 in S mode is pre-installed on this machine. Keyboard is backlit and will let you type comfortably in the dark or dim light.
15.6-inch Full HD widescreen LED-backlit non-touch display with the thin bezels has the 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and IPS panel for very large viewing angles horizontally and vertically. Intel UHD Graphics 620 is built into the main processor, reaches the overall performance levels of the NVIDIA GeForce 920M. And it is good enough for playing basic games and your day to day multimedia tasks. It has a high definition webcam with the 1280 x 720 pixel resolution for sufficient image quality during Skype chats or taking still shots. Sound quality is fine at this level, with the Acer Purified Voice and True Harmony technologies through the two integrated speakers.
Connectivity options include the 802.11ac wireless featuring 2×2 MU-MIMO technology (Dual-Band 2.4GHz and 5GHz), 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN (RJ-45 port), Bluetooth 4.2, an HDMI 2.0 output, a USB 2.0 port, a USB 3.1 Type C Gen 1 port, two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports (one of which with the power- off charging), a headphone jack and a lock point. There is no SD Card Reader and no DVD Drive on this machine. Battery life from its lithium ion battery is reported to be up to 9.5 hours in light use in theory as the typical Thermal Design Power- TDP is 15 watts on this machine.
Acer Aspire 5 (A515-54-30BQ) looks good with the brushed auminium cover and the plastic finish, weighs 3.97 pounds and measures 14.31 x 9.86 x 0.71 inches. There is another memory slot available where you can put 16GB and you can have a total of 32GB of memory if you need that much multitasking power. There is also an SSD slot if you feel comfy about detaching the bottom section. You could add a form factor SSD drive or a 2.5″ SATA drive. The trial version of Microsoft Office is included and you’ll be asked whether you wish to renew it after the expiry. It is nice to have a 128GB size SSD rather than HDD on a low-cost budget machine. The keys on the backlit keyboard are responsive and a tactile feel and click. Acer makes really good and reliable budget priced laptops and we do not hesitate to recommend this specific model. It is a decent laptop for the price.
